Carbon peaking and carbon neutrality are long-term goals that can push forward technological innovation in energy and environment fields through a profound economic and social reform, Chen Yong, member of Chinese Academy of Engineering addressed the first International Finance Forum (IFF) Greater Bay Area Seminar on February 26.

The seminar, held at Nansha District of Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, was the first of the series of events. At the seminar, Chen analyzed relevant policies on the “dual carbon” goals and elaborated his opinion from the perspectives of the construction of a “zero-waste society,” rural rejuvenation strategies and the recycling of retired clean energy devices.

According to Chen, to reach carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, a profound economic and social systemic reform is needed. He highlighted the importance of technological innovation in the implementation of the goals and suggested that the “dual carbon” goals should be integrated into the overall layout of the construction of ecological civilization.

Speaking of the development of clean energies, Chen called on the public to pay attention to the disposal of retired clean energy devices, which, is the key to the sustainable development of the industry.

The retired devices contain many rare and precious metals, which is an important guarantee for new energy development if they can be recycled, but this recycling involves many technologies such as intelligent dismantling, advanced pyrolysis, cleaner smelting, high-quality recycle and other technologies, said Chen.

The IFF Greater Bay Area Seminar will be a monthly event organized by IFF in the future. Taking the full advantage of the world-class think-tank, the seminar will invite influencers in the field of politics, finance and economics to deliver keynote speeches and share their insights through in-depth discussions with invited guests.
